HIST 404: Technology in the Modern World

Today, we face a world riddled with questions about the proper use of technologies. Is nuclear power a solution to the climate crisis despite its negatives? How do we balance the connectivity of social media with its potentially negative effects on mental health? What responsibility does society have for workers who find themselves displaced by new methods of industrial production, automation, and AI? In HIST 404, students will learn how past generations have grappled with questions about the proper use of technologies, how these prior answers have shaped the world in which they live, and how they can approach these questions now and in the future.
