Age of Empires, The Atlantic 1400-1800

 

 

"Age of Empires" explores the history of European expansion between 1492 and 1800 through the encounters it produced across the Americas and Africa. Comparing the Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, and Dutch empires, the course asks what happened when people with different ideas about land, trade, religion, political authority, and social order came into sustained contact. How did they make sense of one another? Videos and readings examine how conquest, exchange, conflict, and everyday interaction created new societies and reshaped the modern world.
