Service Learning in History

This service-learning course will see History undergrads join with Museum Studies Master’s students to design a digital extension to the campus World War I Memorial. Students will research the biographies of the 130 Jayhawk students and faculty who perished in World War I, as well as the surrounding contexts of the World War I experience in Lawrence, at KU, and in the wider world. We will research in university and local archives to compose biographical blurbs and contextual essays that will expand the reach of the physical memorial. We will also collaborate with Museum Studies students to design and implement the digital memorial. Students can expect to work independently to gather material, and then in teams to construct a digital memorial that will stand the test of time. This course offers an excellent opportunity to transform your classroom learning into a lasting public history project.
