At the Movies: US History on the Silver Screen

In this course you will watch movies before class, then talk about them with your peers in large-format class discussion (more fun than it sounds). We will also read and write some, but not too much. By the end of the semester, you will have watched movies from every decade of the past century. And you will know who this guy is and why he matters.

Official Catalog Description:

  • The motion picture was invented right here in the United States more than a century ago, and Americans have been going to the movies ever since. Movies have expressed their dreams and nightmares, aspirations and fears, hopes and dreads.

  • Through a wide-ranging study of Hollywood films from the 1920s to the present, including the industry that created them and the people who watched them, this course explores what Americans have seen and felt at the movies.
